Our teacher Miss Gomm has read to us two chapters of The Big Friendly Giant, a story by Roald Dahl. We are enjoying the story so far, especially the funny words like snozzcumber – which is like a cucumber with black stripes, a food which the BFG eats.
In the story, other giants are scared of the Jack & the beanstalk story because Jack chopped down the beanstalk and killed the giant. The BFG is trying to scare all the other giants away, so they don’t eat Sophie and the other humans who live in the village. Sophie is an 8 year old girl whose mum and dad died when Sophie was a baby. Sophie now lives in an orphanage with other children. They are not happy in the orphanage because there is no electricity and nothing works. The person who looks after them is not nice because if they don’t fold up their clothes properly, the children are put in a cellar.
The BFG catches dreams and puts them in jars to share with children. He caught a nice dream called the golden fizzwhizzer. We will be writing down some of our dreams onto sheets.
Other characters we have heard about are The Queen and the bad giants Fleshlumpeater, Bloodbottler, Bonecruncher and Meatdripper. They eat human beings!
On World Book Day a BFG character will come into our school and we will ask him six questions about his story. We have thought really carefully about the questions we want to ask.
We are excited about World Book Day and are looking forward to learning more about the BFG story.
