Welcome to Class 5P’s very first blog! We are aspiring to write a blog entry every week so that we can tell everybody about all the wonderful things that we have been getting up to, both inside and outside of the classroom.
It has been a busy first few weeks back at school after the (not so sunny) Summer holidays. We have fully immersed ourselves in our Autumn topic, the Victorians. The children have had the opportunity to attempt writing on slate with chalk, just as Victorian children did, and the boys, especially, enjoyed trying on the Dunce’s hat!
To tie in with our Victorian topic, we have started reading the novel, Street Child by Berlie Doherty, during our literacy lessons. So far, the children have produced some fantastic work, including letters to ‘Ma’, which we tea stained and scrunched up, in order to create an old-style effect. This has made for a great looking display!
In science we have been learning about electricity. The children have thoroughly enjoyed being scientists and carrying out specific investigations relating to how electricity works. Unfortunately, not all of our experiments have been successful, but that’s science for you! The children have remained inquisitive, posing some great questions. This week we compared renewable and non-renewable ways of creating electricity, whilst considering how Victorians generated their power.
I think everyone in 5P will agree that one of the most exciting things about our classroom, and the envy of all other classes, is that we have two very unique members of 5P…
…meet Jaws and Fiona! We set up a democratic vote in order to name the fish! You will have to ask members of 5P how and why they came up with the names!
In fact, we had two democratic votes within two days during the first week back: we also named our class ‘teddy’. He goes off on an adventure every weekend with a different child from 5P. The person who has the honour of spending time with the teddy is carefully chosen, based on positive attitudes and behaviour displayed, each week. So far, Anya and Finley have looked after… Mr Squishy(!) and have recorded his adventures in the form of a diary.
What a fun packed, learning fuelled, few weeks we have had so far! Follow our blog to keep up to date with our latest learning.
