This year World Book Day is taking place on Thursday 1st March 2018 to celebrate reading books, authors and illustrators from around the globe. It is annually held in more than 100 countries around the world. A key aim of this event is to give every child in the UK a book of their own to keep. Every child is eligible to receive a £1 World Book Day Token which can be exchanged for one of ten exclusive £1 World Book Day Books, or if you prefer, you can use it to get £1 off any full-priced book.
We will be celebrating this year’s event in various ways…
Dress a potato!
Together with other local schools, this year we have decided to try something a little bit different! Can your child dress up a potato as their favourite book character? Imagine a potato (or similar root vegetable) as Captain Underpants or the Very Hungry Caterpillar! Paint it, stick things to it or clothe it in any way you can think of: the more imaginative the better! Bring your potato to school with you on Thursday 1st March to show your class and explain why you chose your character. There will be book prizes for the most original potato in each class, and every potato will be on display in the large school hall at the end of the school day for parents and carers to come and see.
On Thursday 1st March from 4.30-5.15pm we will once again be hosting the Bedtime Stories event where children can return to school in their pyjamas and slippers to enjoy listening to stories read by school staff. Teddy bears are a must!! Refreshments will be provided for parents and carers in the hall whilst children are enjoying the ‘Bedtime Stories’.
Scholastic Book Fair
From 3 – 3:45pm and then again from 4:30 – 5:15pm on Thursday 1st March, the Scholastic Book Fair will be run in the Large Hall. Come and have a look round after you have seen the potatoes or during Bedtime Stories. Refreshments will be available thanks to the Friends of HTP from 4:30pm. Children will have an opportunity to look around the book fair with their classes during the day but will not be able to purchase any books until after school.
Flying High with Reading
The Reading Ambassadors in school have been working hard to create a display celebrating how we fly high with reading at HTP. The display is in the library and has been entered into a national competition, with the opportunity to win books for our school. If you would like to find out more information about World Book Day, there are ideas, activities and resources at http://www.worldbookday.com/resources/primary/.
We are very exciting about the upcoming events and look forward to seeing all the amazing potatoes.
