Year 2’s gingerbread men experiments

Working in groups of 4 or 5, we were given 2 gingerbread men biscuits.  We cut each gingerbread man in half and placed each half in a separate bowl. We were then given 20ml of water, 20ml of milk, 20ml of vinegar and 20ml of sunflower oil which we poured over each half. We left the biscuits in the liquid for 20 minutes, checking every 5 minutes.

The gingerbread man in the water got wet and soggy and broke up. After 20 minutes it was very soft.

In the milk, the gingerbread man also got wet and soggy and broke up.

In the vinegar, the gingerbread man got bigger because he was absorbing the acid.

In the sunflower oil, we were surprised to see the gingerbread man get lighter in colour on top but darker underneath. The biscuit also became hard and got smaller.

We enjoyed the experiment, which was our first experiment in Year 2, and we were surprised by the results!
