We had a visit from Lucy who works for 2Simple. 2Simple create software for schools called ‘Purple Mash’, which we use in our school. This software includes lots of educational games.
Firstly Lucy talked to us about the 3D printer which she had brought in to show us. She said that 3D printers are used in lots of science labs around the world and there are 3D printers in the space station which is orbiting the earth. In space, they use 3D printers to create tools as soon as they are needed!
Lucy told us that there was a cartridge of purple plastic in the 3D printer which she had brought into our classroom. Lucy used Purple Mash to create a spanner and sent the file to the 3D printer. We were then able to watch the 3D printer print out the spanner. We were told not to touch the printer as it reaches around 200 degrees in order to melt the plastic!
We then used Purple Mash to create our own game pieces.
We enjoyed Lucy’s visit. It was very interesting to learn about what 3D printers are used for and that they are used in the space station.
